TG I'am not.

CBI on Saturday claimed before a Delhi court that it had examined all material aspects before deciding to close a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case against former union minister Jagdish Tytler.

“CBI has considered all the aspects, which emerged during the investigation and a broad, balanced and independent decision has been taken in the case,” the probe agency told Additional Sessions Judge V K Khanna.

Seeking dismissal of a petition filed by the family of the riots victim challenging CBI’s decision to file the closure report against Tytler, the agency said there was no evidence to prosecute him in the case.

“It is prayed that the revision petition filed on behalf of Lakhvinder Kaur be rejected as it is devoid of any merit and has been filed with a purpose to delay the matter,” CBI said.

The investigating agency said the former union minister was present at the Teen Murti Bhawan, where the body of former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was kept, at the time of the incident.

“The role of Tytler was investigated from all possible angles including the possibility of his being involved in conspiracy behind the incident. However, no such role of Tytler came to light,” CBI said.

Tytler gets clean chit in 1984 anti-Sikh riots case

The investigating agency said it had made “concerted” efforts to locate and examine the witnesses to nail the culprits in the incident at Gurudwara Pulbangash here.

CBI alleged the petitioner was trying to introduce new witnesses like Chanchal Singh in the case in order to “delay the matter by hook or crook”.

It said the witness, Jasbir Singh, who is residing in California (USA), was making a false and concocted statement which could not withstand the test of the truth.

Congress’ Bihar list did not mention castes: Tytler

CBI cited the version of witness Surinder Singh, who died in AIIMS last year, to maintain that Tytler had no role in the incident.

The court, after going through CBI’s written submission, asked the victim’s family to file its response and posted the matter for further hearing on August 21.

Denims and dresses, cool shades and casual flip flops, branded T shirts and bright bags — casual chic reigned on Wednesday as Delhi University reopened for a new academic session Wednesday.

Inquisitive about campus life and conscious of fashion trends, freshers too dressed up in their best.

The fashion trend was set according to the needs of the monsoon season. Capris, shorts – with an anklet on one leg – pencil cut jeans and colourful slippers were a common sight.

‘Chappals are the best option available in this muddy and dusty monsoon season. Besides being comfortable, they look trendy,’ said Angela, a first year student from St. Stephens.

While some flaunted brands like Reebok, Adidas and Converse, others wore the always popular kolhapuris and ‘Oshos’ from Sarojini Nagar and Janpath.

If girls were dressed in the latest fashion trends, so were the boys, many of whom were sporting low rise jeans and colourful T-shirts from Benetton, Reebok and the like.

Overweight people who pursue unhealthy lifestyles should pay higher taxes in order to cover the extra costs they create for Germany’s healthcare system, a conservative lawmaker has said.

‘The question must be admitted whether the immense costs that, for example, arise from excessive consumption of food, can be permanently paid out of the consolidated health system,’ said Marco Wanderwitz, the conservative member of parliament from the state of Saxony.

‘I think it’s sensible that people who knowingly live unhealthily carry a responsibility for it in a financial respect,’ said Wanderwitz, who is also head of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democrats’s group of young parliamentarians.

Study shows obesity rates still rising

He was supported by Juergen Wasem, an economist who said foods like chocolate should carry health warnings, The Daily Telegraph reported on Thursday.

‘As with tobacco, we should tax the purchase of unhealthy consumer goods at a higher rate and pay that tax into the health system,’ he said.

Germany’s health system is funded by a series of mandatory health insurance funds, all of which are reporting serious deficits as the system is overused.

Bild, the German newspaper, estimated that treatment for obesity-related illnesses cost Germany some 16 billion pounds a year, the report said.

Recently the German Teachers’ Association recommended weighing children in class each day and reporting the seriously overweight to social services, who would have the power to remove them to clinics.

Experimental diet pill shows promise, little risk

Although opposition politicians slammed the ‘fat-tax’ proposal, researchers at the Jacobs University in Bremen city claimed its work proved that the majority of the public would back a tax on people whose unhealthy lifestyles landed them in hospital or under other medical care.

Pakistan and Afghanistan on Sunday reached an understanding on all major issues relating to transit trade, with Afghanistan being permitted to send its goods to India through the Wagah border but not vice versa.

In return, Pakistan would be able to export its goods to Central Asian countries through Afghanistan.

A broad-based record note on this was signed on Sunday evening by Pakistan Commerce Minister Amin Fahim and his Afghan counterpart Anwarul Haq in the presence of Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Online news agency reported.

This issue of allowing Indian goods to Afghanistan through Wagah would be discussed in bilateral talks with India, sources said.

The note mentions that the Afghan trucks will be allowed to carry Afghan transit export cargo on designated routes to Pakistani seaports and Wagah and hoped that resolution of all outstanding matters relating to the finalisation of Afghan-Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement would help in the early signing of the agreement, after completion of legal processes from both sides.

The Afghan transport units, on return, shall be permitted to carry goods from Pakistan to Afghanistan under the same expeditious procedures and conditions as Pakistani transport units.

It was also decided that all Afghan transit goods would be exported in containers of international specifications.

According to the note, the drivers and cleaners will be allowed to enter/exit the two countries on permits, identified by biometric devices installed at the entry points.

To tackle the issue of unauthorised trade, it has been agreed that tracking devices on transport units will be installed and a mechanism for custom-to-custom information sharing (IT data and others) will be established.

It has also been agreed that financial guarantees equal to the amount of import levies of Pakistan have to be deposited by authorised brokers and custom clearing agents to check the unauthorised trade and these deposits will be released after the goods exit the country.

In case, the goods do not exit the country within specified time, the guarantees will be encashed by the customs authorities.

Why is Pakistan silent on the “genocide in occupied Kashmir” where Indian security forces are “brutally crushing the human, civil and political rights of the Kashmiris and even preventing them from praying in mosques”, an editorial in a Pakistani Urdu paper on Sunday said.

“Today the Hindu society is developing new strategies to carry out a genocide of the Kashmiri Muslims… Today the most brazen violation of human rights is taking place in India-occupied Kashmir,” the editorial in the Nawa-i-Waqt said.

It said Kashmiris, who have been struggling for self-determination for more that 100 years – first against the autocratic Dogra rulers and now against the Indian government – were being sought to be crushed by their “oppressors in the most barbaric ways”, including violent repression of protests, imposing curfews and stiff restrictions and even a ban on congregational prayers in mosques.

Titled “Kashmir mein namaz jamaa band, chairman Kashmir committee kahan hai (Congregational prayers banned in Kashmir, where is chairman of the Kashmir Committee)”, it said the “biggest incapability of the Pakistan government was that neither was it aiding the ongoing struggle for independence of the Kashmiris, nor was it protesting the trampling of human, civil and political rights of the Kashmiri Muslims or informing the international media of the happenings”.

Separatist shutdown, restrictions cripple Srinagar again

“There is a Kashmir Committee in the National Assembly and Maulana Fazl-ur-Rehman is its chairman. But neither the chairman nor the committee talks about Kashmir or presents a way to make the ongoing struggle of the Kashmiris for self-determination successful.”

“It is the opinion of the people that the committee and its chairman be energised to discharge their allotted functions or else such a chief be found who has the interests of the Pakistani people and the Kashmiri people at heart,” the editorial demanded.

“It is a tribute to his vision that he agreed to pursue the peace process,” Qureshi told journalists at the end of the press conference he addressed jointly with his Indian counterpart S M Krishna here.

A scroll featuring more than 40,000 handprints from China’s Jilin province has been officially named the largest handprint scroll in the world by the Guinness World Records.

The waterproof scroll, measuring 3,715.86 square metres, was demonstrated at the opening of the third Changchun international automobile festival on Thursday in Changchun.

After nearly four hours of measuring the scroll, Wu Xiaohong, an official for the Guinness World Records, announced that the scroll has set a new world record, Xinhua reported.

The handprint scroll is 115.86 square metres larger than the previous world record holder from India.

“Everyone’s handprints are different. We made the scroll to show local people’s good wishes for the future of their hometown,” an organiser of the festival said.

Changchun is a major automobile manufacturing base in China.
