India–China resume delimitation talks: dialogue widens, the dispute holds

A fresh round of India–China talks turned "forward-looking" on boundary delimitation and LAC management, with both sides tying border calm to normalising the wider relationship — even as border infrastructure-building continues and the underlying territorial claim stays untouched.

What happened

A recent round of India–China boundary talks was reported as “constructive” and “forward-looking” on the harder questions of delimitation and LAC management, with both sides linking sustained border calm to normalising the broader relationship (The Hindu; The New Indian Express; Telegraph India). The Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) separately reviewed the LAC situation (News On AIR). The Army Chief’s public figure of roughly 1,100 annual military interactions along the border (DD India; Open Magazine) is a useful measure of how routinised day-to-day contact management has become.

Reading it against the record

Set against the post-2024 managed freeze — patrolling restored at the friction points, the crisis contained, the underlying territorial claim untouched (see the India–China timeline) — this is incremental movement from crisis-containment toward structured dialogue on the underlying boundary question, and, notably, dialogue explicitly tied to normalisation rather than held separate from it. What has not changed: the Indian Army’s forward posture, the infrastructure build-out on both sides (Indo-Pacific Defense FORUM), and the unresolved claim over Arunachal Pradesh (Lowy Institute). Talks about the border are not the same as a settled border.

Reading the coverage

The domestic-vs-foreign divergence here is low: the story is covered similarly across Indian, US and Pakistani news editions, and the single most cited voice across all three is the Observer Research Foundation (ORF). This is characteristic of diplomatic-process stories — coverage converges where flashpoints diverge. (Edition volumes are shown at the query cap; the signal is the outlet mix, not the count.)
